PARIS – Albert Elbaz, the designer of the Lanvin fashion house in Paris, was born in Morocco and grew up in a modest apartment in Holon. He studied design at the Shenkar School of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, and is considered to be one of the world’s most influential and successful fashion designers.

“Especially during difficult times like these, I felt I had to provide women with a feeling of ease,” Elbaz said, adding that at first he was not aware of the significance of this cutting technique, and rather worked from a gut feeling. “It is only now that I realize that this technique embraces a woman’s body. Instead of surrendering to the pull of gravity and drooping, the clothes rest on the body.”
Later in the show, furs, embroidery and sparkling stone embellishments took over, accompanied by large pieces of jewelry. For the finale, the models strode down the runway as a group, smiling at the audience and waving. Fashion-show models don’t usually display such ease, but the atmosphere at Lanvin is both warm and familial and encourages it.
Asked about his inspiration for the collection, Elbaz stressed that women’s lives are always his main focus: “Dreams, needs, morning, evening, longevity, love, divorce, all those things. One must think about the world economic situation, and at the same time respect tradition, knowledge and technique. Anyone who does not have a past cannot have a future.”
Three days after the show, lunching at the bar of his favorite luxury hotel, the Hotel de Crillon, Elbaz looked a bit exhausted, but was as relaxed and amusing as always. He was wearing a dark jacket and trousers, a pale shirt with many buttons left undone and a green silk scarf tied nonchalantly around his neck.

Asked whether he felt a sense of victory after such a successful show and much praise from the international press, he said: “In fashion there is no such thing as winners and losers. I am still a soldier on the battlefield, continuing my battle and aware of the many dangers that lie in pride and a feeling of victory. When I read the things they write about me, I feel like they were written about someone else. In this week’s The New Yorker, they wrote a comprehensive and sympathetic profile of me. When I read it, I thought to myself that I would like to meet this man.”
It seems as though Elbaz is fearful of truly enjoying his status and professional achievements, scared of losing everything. Recently, in the wake of management changes at Lanvin, the international media were full of rumors of Elbaz’s departure. “There are always rumors. In the past there were rumors that I was planning to defect to Chanel or to the LVMH conglomerate. It’s just gossip,” he explained.
In The New Yorker, he revealed publicly for the first timethe identity of his partner of 16 years, Alex Koo. Next month’s family edition of French Vogue will feature a photo of the two. They met at the New York department store Barneys, where Koo was a buyer. For the past three years, he has been in charge of marketing at Lanvin. “He has translated all my dreams into an industry, but he has also sometimes punctured some of them,” Elbaz admitted.
After the show, Elbaz took the entire Lanvin team out for a festive dinner. Then he went home to read the weekend papers from Israel.
“On Friday nights I read all the newspapers in Hebrew,” he said. “I start with Harriet Magazine’s ‘Family Affair’ column. Reading about a family that lives in a third-floor, 90-square-meter apartment and all the things they do, their habits, allows me to enter their lives and I immediately feel like I’m in Israel. Then I move on to read a bit about kids casting call and culture, and catch up on the local gossip. Today I no longer know the people they write about, but I still enjoy the color, the good-looking guys and girls. Only then do I read about all the horrors and disasters. I start the Sabbath with human stories from Israel, a bit like meeting friends for coffee.”
Elbaz said he misses the people, the smells, the tastes and the sounds of Israel, as well as seeing his family and friends there. “It’s good to have longings. It makes you feel like you are always in love,” he commented.
He was contemplating a brief visit to Israel recently, but was too tired after the show. “After a show, what I need most is the warmth and love in Israel. QUANTICO — Six-year old Ryan Rosetta clasped his sister Citrate hand, flashed a smile, squared his shoulder and sailed down the runway like a professional modeling job Sunday during a spring fashion show sponsor by Operation Home front and Lincoln Family Housing at Quantico Family Center.
“I had to bribe her with M & M’s,” laughed the children’s mother Karin Tanner as she embrace her daughter Carie Tanner, 2, following her debut on the catwalk.
Karin Tanner’s husband, Sgt. Devin Tanner, enjoyed watching the show.
“This is nice,” he said. “It was worth all the work.”
Ryan, who wore a black tuxedo and red boutonniere, and Carie, who wore a sleeveless pink gown, were among the dozens of service members’ children, ranging in age from infants to teens, who model the season’s latest styles in the show. Parents and volunteers helped style the modeling tips hair and get them into their new clothes prior to the show.
“They’re absolutely adorable,” said Vivian Dietrich, who heads up the D.C. metro chapter of Operation Home front, a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance and morale programs to military families.
The models and other girls attending the show each received two dresses of their choice to take home.
“This is their day that they’re getting dressed up, and being able to walk down the runway and show off their new spring fashions,” added Dietrich.
Operation Home front received a large donation of brand-new spring dresses from Kids in Distressed Situations, or K.I.D.S., which brings together manufacturers and retailers in a partnership with its network of more than a thousand social service agencies.
“K.I.D.S. has thousands of contributors that donate items from toys to school supplies and in this case spring dresses,” said Dietrich. “So, we said what better way to celebrate with our military families than to have a free dress giveaway and a chance to model in front of their moms and dads?”
The Quantico fashion show was the first of three such events planned for the greater Washington, D.C. area. The second will be held in Annapolis on Saturday and the third is in Indian head, Md. on March 28.

These designers revolutionized women’s silhouettes, style, and established women in the front line of the
fashion business.
During this period, Anita Colby was the highest paid model, appearing on billboards and in magazines. She earned $50 an hour, modeling as a sideline to selling ads for Harper’s Bazaar. The Society Girl era of modeling really began when Vogue produced its first color cover in 1932. To be the cover girl became the ultimate prize, and modeling began to be seen as a career rather than a side job.
After appearing in the film Cover Girl in 1944, Anita was hired by Hollywood producer David O. Selznick as “feminine director” of Selznick Studios. Her job was to teach his leading ladies—including Ingrid Bergman and Joan Fontaine—poise, beauty, and publicity. Grace Kelly, model turned actress, seamlessly transformed from onscreen star to real-life princess when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Never before had modeling promised such a “happily ever after” future. Women were now turning to fashion influenced by the silver screen, and the Hollywood Glamour era of modeling emerged.
But the line between actress and model began to blur. Actresses like Vivien Leigh, Ava Gardner, and Marilyn Monroe could smolder onscreen or in the front row,
though fashion was craving its own stars. By the time Christian Dior’s New Look line debuted in 1947, fashion had become news and designers wanted their own muses and hire female models to bring their designs to life. The fashion illustrations like those of Erté and Rene Gruau that were popular during the post-WWII years now seemed outdated, as Paris salon shows went from being sketched to photographed, attracting private clients and inviting the press. Photographers Cecil Beaton and Irving Penn at Vogue and Richard Avedon at Harper’s Bazaar were proving to the world that girls were more than just a pretty face. It was their lenses that turned modeling into a business, and model agencies and the model were born.
When Dorian Leigh Parker began modeling in 1944, her father asked her to drop “Parker” from her name, as he did not approve of her profession. Model Carmen Dell’Orefice, who began modeling in 1945, once described Dorian as “so sexy without saying a word.” Dorian went on to land seven Vogue covers in 1946 and would appear on another 50 covers over the next six years. Her “Fire and Ice” campaign for Revlon in 1952 remains iconic today, and she was rumored to be the inspiration for the character Holly Golightly in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. When she signed with Eileen Ford’s newly created Ford Model Agency it was on the condition that they also sign her younger sister, Suzy Parker. (Their father’s consent to use his surname is testament to the legitimization modeling had gained as a career.) Dorian opened the door to a sister who would ultimately go on to eclipse her success. Suzy, with a cameo role in Funny Face, became Avedon’s muse, the
face of Revlon, and the first model to earn $100,000. This was not only sibling rivalry, this was business.
Despite the successful careers of Dorian and Suzy, the undisputed face of this era was Lisa Fonssagrives. Coined as the first “supermodel,” her iconic spirit and elegance would be the inspiration, decades later, for John Galliano’s Dior haute couture Fall 2008 show. Lisa appeared on the covers of TIME, LIFE, Vanity Fair, as well as Vogue, and went on to marry one of the greatest fashion photographers, Irving Penn, in 1950.
It didn’t take long for the world to become fascinated with fashion; the designers, the drama, the new looks. Avedon was even immortalized in the film Funny Face as Dick Avery (played by Fred Astaire; Audrey Hepburn was his cover girl). His character asks, “What’s wrong with bringing out a girl who has character, spirit, and intelligence?”
The quest had begun.
